After inhaling two Double-Doubles and two orders of fries (animal style), I still wasn’t “stuffed”.
Something was up. Because despite not feeling physically full, my eating behaviors were… suspicious.
Recognizing something was off, I advised myself to do exactly what I advise my clients to do: I put on my Sherlock Holmes cap, grabbed my magnifying glass, and began an investigation to solve the mystery.
Tune in to this Sherlock Holmes mystery thriller to hear each clue that led me to figure out what was the real reason I was overeating.
Here’s a hint: my eating behaviors that night were a SYMPTOM of not paying attention to what my body, mind, and spirit needed in times of secondary terror and trauma.
What I had really needed was space for grieving, confusion, fear, and anger. I needed deep connection with loved ones, to hug my husband and child, and to rest. I needed what I call unapologetic self-care, not a double order at In N Out.
Here’s what I want you to know:
I didn’t gain a bunch of weight from that episode because I have practiced this kind of self-awareness + sleuthing enough to interrupt the cycle before it can have an impact on me long term
I didn’t give myself permission to say “Eff it” and eat everything in sight for three days because “I already effed up! Might as well.”
I didn’t stop the cycle with willpower, self-deprecation, or deprivation. I stopped it with self-love, self-awareness, and compassion.
Tune in to hear the 8 things I did to recover from overeating.
