When New Year’s comes around, we tend to set goals about what we want to achieve in the next 365 days. We feel that burst of dopamine and motivation that appear when we just start visualizing them.

The next morning, we dust our sneakers off and head to the gym, and we sustain that habit for a few weeks. We even watch what we’re eating, and start to feel better about ourselves. And then life kicks in. You have to walk the dogs, you have to take care of your children in the morning, or some other obligations come up you can’t escape from.

Suddenly, that habit you’ve started doesn’t seem sustainable anymore. And that new goal seems increasingly out of reach with each passing day. In the end, you blame lack of motivation. But, motivation doesn’t have anything to do with it. Sure, it can ignite a fire under your butt like nothing else when you imagine yourself achieving your goals.

But, there will be hiccups along the way. And how you deal with them is what will make or break whether you succeed.
